I think Elvis would approve.

My mom hates Elvis. This has always mystified me. Who hates Elvis?! I can understand not loving him, but hating him. Come on. Personally, I love me some Elvis. Early and late stuff. Although, I like Big Mama Thornton‘s “Hound Dog” much better (she came first!) than Elvis’s version, The King can’t be touched. He is Rock and Roll, which of course leads people to imitate his greatness from time to time.  And no, I am not referring to the bevy of Elvis impersonators walking amongst us, I’m talking about covers. Cover versions can walk a fine line, especially when they play on classics, they can either alter too much of the original track or change too little, BUT sometimes they get it just right. I think daring to make a cover of any Elvis song is ballsy, but this particular track by Rusted Root, a cover of “Suspicious Minds“, just plain works.Rusted Root brings their unique style to this melodic classic and I can’t get enough of it. This is actually going to be a double feature today because if you haven’t heard Thornton’s “Hound Dog” you’re missing out, so please enjoy Big Mama and Rusted Root singing two soulful tunes that the King made legendary.
